About the unit: The original Marantz 2215 hit the audio scene in the early 1970s, and was produced until 1974. It sold with a handsome list price of $199.95 (Ref. Stereo Review, Nov. 1971, pg. 43). While I have seen quite a few 2215 units for repair, I personally have never seen one with a stamped chassis date/serial for 1970, all were 1971 or later. The 2015 unit was indeed a highly popular capacitor coupled amplifier design with a three section tuner. Folks loved it. By the mid 1970s electronics advancements and production pace required changes more frequently. Due to production and supply demands, Marantz kept pace with technology updates by redesigning popular units with generally similar feature sets and designated them as "B" units.
The 2215B was introduced in many audio magazines in 1975 as the update to the 2215. The list price was up to 249.95 (Stereo Directory Buying Guide 1977 pg. 50) and by the end of 1975, units were flowing into the USA. These new units had some updated parts in the FM section (ICs) , Preamp Sections (caps transistors) and amplifier section, technological advances including ICs and the use of smaller updated components. For example; the 2215B has a slider potentiometer for the balance control while the 2215 had a knob. The 2215B Is schematically closer to the Internationally released 2216 than the 2215. While most of the specs stayed the same, the THD actually improved from 1% to .08% in the B unit.
Summary: In tandem with a pair of period correct speakers, and a phono or tuner, this unit will produce the mellow smooth sound one would expect from a Marantz 2215B. Your favorite classic records will bring back those memories and will never come across as harsh – even with a CD player in the Aux input.
