The Sansui 661 is well known collectable receiver with the classic 1970s look made in Japan. Its position in the Sansui lineup was third down from the 881, but 5th up from the 221. It was a upper midrange system, with an attractive front panel and an wood cabinet. It's MOS FET equipped tuner, versatile preamp control section, two stereo tape record/monitor circuits, stereo AUX inputs, and more would normally require a high price tag. Sansui positioned the 661 as a budget-priced stereo receiver that delivered expensive tonal quality and performance (from original brochure - copy included). The unit was well received by the market as it was manufactured from 1970 to 1976.

The improved performance and reasonable price breakthrough was achieved through the introduction of Sansui Circuit Board Modules (CBM). These CBM component building blocks enabled Sansui to create a comprehensive line of lower cost higher quality receivers. The CBM concept became fairly common practice in subsequent models and in fact in most competitors product lines.

The 661 specifications indicate the unit produces 20 Watts RMS per channel into 8 ohms (40 Watts at 4 Ohms) with no more than 0.5% total harmonic distortion. As a side note: we measured this unit at 28.5 Watts RMS) The frequency response is equally impressive from 15Hz to 30 kHz with a damping factor is 60. The output power transistors in the Sansui 661 are protected by several elaborate power protection devices. These include four quick-acting fuses and a multi purpose positive-action relay circuit. The fuses and power on relay also protects speakers from damage, and eliminate typical power on noise. The power amp is of a very advanced all-stage direct-coupled OCL design with a surprisingly wide power bandwidth of 15 - 40 kHz with very low overall distortion.

Recent Service: All controls, pots, selectors were cleaned and tested and are quiet! The unit is clean inside (see photos). All lamps have been replaced with original incandescent, not LED. The FM tuner was aligned per the manual, the AM was fine. This unit has the original Hitachi power transistors (2SC1030) all are well within spec. the units dc offset (bias) was adjusted to just under 20 mA on both channels. DALAUDIO went through the typical problematic caps and made replacements as needed. The unit was not fully recapped, and it is very near original. It is currently fully functional. A copy of the manual and service manual are available, please bring a USB drive if you would like them. A copy of the original 661 brochure is available as well (see photo).
