Recent Service - This unit has been serviced, all pots/switches are clean and noise free. It has had some common known components replaced. The power switch is in good operating condition. Most folks looking for these will be familiar with the power issue as this is one of the Achilles heels for this unit. Several capacitors, resistors, transistors (in the gain stages) and lights were replaced. All components used were of excellent quality. All work was done by DALAUDIO in July of 2024. The unit is in good condition as can be seen by the photos.

More about the unit.

The Kenwood KR-9600 was clearly one of the best receivers ever made by Kenwood. In fact, it’s one of the most powerful receivers ever made by anyone except maybe Pioneer. The KR-9600 was manufactured from 1976-1978, sold at $750-800 and was marketed as Kenwood’s flagship receiver. This unit was clearly Kenwood's response to battle Pioneer.

Power: This monster puts out a massive 160 watts per channel into 8 ohms with only 0.08% THD. In 1970s that much power was impressive indeed! To pull this off, the unit features dual power supplies and massive heatsinks to dissipate the heat generated by the amp section.

Tuner: Sometimes not as appreciated in our current day, the KR 9600 also boasted a state of the art AM/FM tuner section. To keep things rocking, it was equipped with Kenwood's ASO (Area of Safe Operation) protection circuit. This also has main in and main out strapping, so the unit can be used as a power amp or preamp.

Controls: The unit has a two step loudness control, triple tone (low mid, high) controls and low and high filters. It has a mix/ mix with source fade that allows you to plug a microphone into the mic jack while playing from music from another source. So, you can sing along with the music or record yourself over it. It has a selective 3 Speaker systems capability as well! The tone control features a flat/Tone switch for the separate bass/mid/treble tone controls a

Inputs/outputs: Oh yeah and a headphone jack. On the input side it has a warm sounding FET differential amplifier phono input and two separate phone EQ’s to accommodate different cartridges. They are switchable from the front controls. All this for your vinyl.

Meters! Everyone loves meters! This unit has dual power meters with two step range selection at 3 Watts and 300 Watts. It has Signal /Deviation and Tuning meters as well.

The KR-9600 really is a monster and weighs in at 53 pounds. Its dimensions are roughly 27″ x 6 5/8″ x 16 1/2″.
